Foods That Stain Your Teeth: Tea and Your Teeth

Although tea has a reputation as a healthy beverage, it may not be the best choice when it comes to keeping your teeth white. Dentists say tea -- especially the basic black variety -- can cause more stains than coffee. However, recent studies have found that even herbal teas and white teas have the potential to erode enamel and cause tooth staining.

Tooth Decay and Sensitivity

What Causes Tooth Enamel Damage?

What happens when tooth enamel is damaged? The exposed part underneath becomes vulnerable to decay. Cavities aren't the only problem.

Teeth with damaged enamel can become sensitive to extreme temperatures. Suddenly, eating ice cream or sipping hot coffee can be painful or unpleasant.

Sedation Dentistry

Complete Comfort During Your Dental Care with Sedation Dentistry
Sedation Dentistry in Savannah GA
We understand that a trip to the dentist can be a difficult experience for some people. Shots, drills, and the use of all the necessary instruments can create anxiety. But now, we can alleviate all the fears and worries of the dentally challenged. With conscious sedation dentistry, these patients will become calm and not remember the treatment.

With just a single pill you take an hour before your appointment, you will begin to feel increasingly relaxed as you sit down in the dental chair. Gradually, your sedation will deepen, but you are still conscious enough to answer questions from the doctor. You will be put on a monitor for observation of your vital signs throughout the treatment. When the procedure is completed, a friend or family member will drive you home. After about an hour, you will be back to normal.

Relaxed Dental Treatment Savannah GAUnlike sedation for surgery, you are not totally unconscious, just unaware of the work being performed. This level of sedation works well for those who have a greater fear of being completely “put under.” This fear is typically based on relinquishing control. That’s why conscious sedation works well for most patient anxieties.

Other patients may need to have more work completed in a single visit. They cannot make repeated visits to the dentist, so accomplishing more work in one longer visit with suitable sedation accommodates their needs. And then some patients are resistant to anesthesia and need conscious sedation in addition to the regular anesthesia to have dental work performed.

We are one of the few practices in the state qualified to administer a full range of sedation options, including IV sedation. We also offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for lighter sedation. We offer this array of options to let all of our patients feel comfortable and relaxed throughout their dental treatments.

How Enamel Protects Your Teeth

What Causes Tooth Enamel Damage?

Enamel is kind of like the shell of an egg: it protects the softer, more vulnerable part of the tooth inside.
But unlike an eggshell, the thin layer of enamel is tough.

In fact, enamel is the hardest substance in the body. It can withstand decades of biting, chewing and crunching -- with some luck and good dental care.

Sleep Apnea & Snoring Disorder Dental Treatment

Always Tired? Sleep Loss Can Kill You
Sleep Apnea Treatment Dentist Savannah Sufficient and restful sleep is very important for overall good health. Restorative sleep lets your entire body decompress and unwind from all the stresses you have burdened your system with throughout the day. Sleep should be revitalizing to your brain and body, allowing it to regain enough energy for another full day of activity. In contrast, lack of sound sleep can place excessive stress on the heart muscle and contribute to cardiovascular disease or hypertension. These serious conditions have been connected to lack of sufficient or restful sleep.

Snoring Is More Than an Annoyance
Snoring is often a symptom of a more serious health concern, known as sleep apnea. This condition prevents the sufficient flow of oxygen into the lungs throughout the night. It is caused by an obstruction in the air passage. When left untreated, the result can be serious health concerns for the heart and brain and even lead to premature death. With all the additional stress being placed on the body, the resulting increase in stress hormones can also lead to depression.

We have a solution to keep the airway open during sleep. It is an oral appliance that eliminates snoring and, more importantly, maintains continual and even breathing patterns throughout the night to provide a restful sleep.

Snoring Disorder Dental TreatmentOur Alternative to CPAP
The usual solution for sleep apnea is the use of the CPAP device during sleep. It is a machine that provides a continuous flow of air into the nose or mouth through a mask that is worn over this area of the face. Many people find wearing a bulky mask uncomfortable and an unsatisfactory solution to the problem, so they discontinue wearing the mask.

If you feel frustrated that the CPAP is not a solution to your problem, let us show you an alternative that is easier and more comfortable to use. Our doctors will custom fit you with the SomnoDent™, an acrylic oral appliance that will realign your jaw and tongue to keep your airway open and allow the air to flow into your lungs during sleep. It is similar to a mouthguard, as it fits over both the upper and lower teeth. It can be removed and easily cleaned and takes up little space in your suitcase when traveling. The appliance is very successful in relieving snoring and providing restful sleep.

Grinding Teeth

What Causes Tooth Enamel Damage?

Another cause of tooth enamel damage is bruxism -- or teeth-grinding. Over time, the constant clenching and friction can wear down or fracture the enamel. In this slide, teeth grinding has ground down the upper and lower front teeth.

Bruxism is often worst when you sleep -- that's when you can't control it. Reducing stress may help. Some people wear a special mouth guard to bed.

Dental Implants Dentist

Dental Implants to Replace Missing Teeth SavannahImplants Are an Ideal Replacement
Dental implants appear life-like as they come up through the gums, and look and function just like real teeth. They return the ability to chew a variety of foods and give a full and healthy smile. Implants can replace one or many missing teeth. Those with no teeth can benefit, as they can replace dentures that slip and tilt and instead provide stability when chewing or speaking. There is no need to go to another dental office, as we have complete capabilities for this process from post placement to crown fabrication.

Immediate Load Implants – Another Option
In addition to traditional implants, we offer our patients All-on-4™ immediate load implants. They are placed in your mouth and immediately are ready to absorb any pressure from chewing. Previously, there was a waiting time of six months for the adjacent bone to heal. As we can complete the entire procedure in our office in a single visit, there is no need to be referred to an oral surgeon. These will securely hold your dentures in place with only four implants and never need to be removed. They provide support as strong as your natural teeth.
